of course they are in connecticut. do you find that it's getting more difficult as we get to know the victims and we see their faces in the pictures or that people are finding comfort in just coming together right now? >> reporter: absolutely. i think that is the comfort a lot of these people here in this community are feeling because at least they know that as hard as this may be especially when you see the names and the anales of the victims, they are as far as the young children go six and seven years old when you search the faces and names it's difficult but they are all banding together with relatively big turnout at this vigil tonight. it was this huge turnout at a vigil just a couple of days ago here. more than a thousand people came out. but the support is something that is needed. they even have grief counseling available to anybody in the community who may need it. they are not used to this tragedy here. in the past ten years they have seen one homicide. this is very new for this community. >> ren marsh thank

connecticut's got a very strong set of gun laws. an assault weapons ban that ironically did not cover the weapon used in this case apparently. they tried to limit the high capacity clips. >> okay. >> and they faced tremendous pressure and weren't able to do that, and they still have tough laws. how do you change the dynamic? you say this does change it automatically. >> david, having tough laws is one thing and enforcing those laws is something different. a legislator's job is to come up with laws, to come up to agreements, get everybody into a room, form a bipartisan coalition, get everybody something. get the majority get the most of it. an executive's job is to make a decision. an executive's job is to go out and take the law and apply it and given the intent of the law. that's exactly what we do in new york. the fact that we have the lowest murder rate of any big city in the country says we know what we are doing and we have it every year. we have had a reduction in murder rate virtually every single year for the last 20 years.

i think you need to know that the connecticut s.p.a. office has approved $6.7 million in disaster assistance for struggling business in connecticut as well as residents. that figure is significant but there are a large number of requests for funding that is still being processed. therefore, a large number of homeowners and small businesses that need assistance their request for assistance, quite frankly, are still in the pipeline and we would appreciate even quicker attention and processing of them. nearly a month after hurricane sandy many connecticut residents are still waiting to hear if they are able to repair their storm-damaged homes. and small businesses are waiting to find out if they will have enough capital to retour their businesses to the pre- disaster conditions. they put their lives and their livelihoods back on track, they deserve to have that opportunity and i hope that the supplement will be approved quickly with the additional $250 million that will be able to service these loans as quickly as possible. i appreciate yo
